New original painting

Just back in the UK for a few days to organise the scanning and printing of my latest 40″ x 20″ canvas ‘A Hero in two World Wars’. It is based upon the events of 8 June 1918 when Lt W H G Milnes of 25 Sqn and his gunner Hartley Pullan claimed a Fokker DR.1 whilst flying DH4 A7626. The title relates to the pilot, Rev W H G Milnes, who won the MC flying the DH4 and was then instrumental, (as the headmaster of Elizabeth College Guernsey), in the evacuation of his pupils to the UK days before the German invasion of the island in 1940. As you can see from the close-up below, the DH4’s rigging is quite a challenge! We plan to have prints of this one available soon.

New Original – Arctic Aces

Just finished the first painting of 2016. It’s for the cover of Osprey’s forthcoming Arctic Bf109 and Bf110 Aces and depicts Lt Theo Weissenberger of 7/JG5 engaging a mixed force of Soviet bombers attacking a convoy off the Rybachiy Peninsula on 4 July 1943. Weissenberger claimed seven victories that day including three British built Hampden bombers.
Possibly an odd decision by the author to go for mid-summer and no snow camouflage in view of the title of the book, but I tried to capture that midnight sun light that makes the area so distinctive at that time of year. The original is now for sale, click on the image for more information.
