To Fight Another Day – Prints now available

Just received the prints of the painting ‘To Fight Another Day’, (and the Whitley painting), and will be signing them in the morning.  I featured this painting as a work in progress before Christmas so I’m delighted to be able to launch the prints at last.  It depicts Pilot Officer W C ‘Bill’ Watling of 92 Squadron struggling to bale out of his burning Spitfire P9372 after being bounced by Messerschmitt Bf109s off Camber Sands on 9th September 1940. Bill managed to escape with burns to his hands and face, whilst his Spitfire crashed just inland near East Guldeford.

Hurricanes into Battle NEW PRINT

Hurricanes into Battle 1000

We’re delighted to announce the launch of the second print in my Battle of Britain trilogy, ‘Hurricanes into Battle’.  It depicts 249 Squadron carrying out a head-on attack against Dornier 17s at the height of the Battle of Britain.  The nearest Hurricane, V7313 GN-F was the favourite aircraft of Battle of Britain ace Tom Neil and I was delighted to show him the painting for approval over the weekend.   He has generously signed the 30 artist proofs of this print which are available for sale from today.

Three New Prints added

I’m back in the UK for a week to prepare for the 100th Anniversary Celebrations of 30 Squadron at RAF Brize Norton next week.  This has given me a chance to print and upload three new prints to the website; Out of the Darkness which depicts a 30 Squadron Hercules departing Kabul International Airport, Winter Tempest which shows 56 Squadron Tempests in Holland and Harriers over Belize which shows GR3s over the Blue Hole.

New Limited Edition Print – The Last Flight of Dark Victor

Dark Victor1000

On 5th August 1944, Canadian pilot Flt Lt Don Cheney DFC of 617 (Dambuster) Squadron was struggling to escape from a burning Lancaster ‘Dark Victor’ over the Bay of Douarnenez during a raid on the U-boat pens at Brest in France. He and four of his crew survived and the people of Douarnenez kept him safe from the Germans until they left the area some weeks later. Now 70 years later with Don in failing health, his daughter and family of the other crew members are returning to Douarnenez to present my specially commissioned painting to the town in recognition of their help on this day.
I worked closely with Don to create an exact representation of what happened on this day. (Don eventually had to squeeze himself out of the cockpit escape hatch as you can see in the painting.) He wrote such a moving account of what happened that I decided to include it all on this limited edition print as an extra side panel. This section can be left alongside the image or trimmed and mounted on the back if the print is framed.
