On 12th June 1942, in one of the most audacious solo operations of the war, Flt Lt Gatward and Sgt Fern flew their 236 Squadron Beaufighter down the Champs Elysee in Paris and dropped a French Tricolor. They then strafed the nearby headquarters of the Kriegsmarine before returning safely back to base.
