Hurricanes over Dunkirk

On the evening of 27th May 1940, Hawker Hurricanes of 601, 145 and 79 Squadrons encountered over 40 Me110s over the beaches of Dunkirk. The subsequent combat, which also involved Spitfires of 610 Squadron and Hurricanes of 56 Squadron, resulted in several losses on both sides including Hurricane P2568 UF-R of 601 Squadron, flown by Sir Archibald Hope, who force landed on the beach just east of the town.

Having just co-written the Dunkirk – Air Combat Archive book for Red Kite I really wanted to paint some scenes from this fascinating part of British history. The project will paint the Spitfire, Hurricane and Defiant in action during Operation Dynamo when RAF Fighter Command did its best to provide continuous air cover from dawn until dusk over the Dunkirk beaches ”
“This second painting depicts Sir Archibald Hope’s Hurricane directly overhead Dunkirk harbour and the famous eastern mole from which the majority of soldiers boarded the ships for home.”
