A Curtiss P-40N-5 of the RNZAF moments away from colliding with a Japanese Zero flown by Masajiro “Mike” Kawato over the Rabaul area on 17 December 1943.
This original painting was commissioned for a new Osprey book and is based upon the Japanese pilot’s account of a mid-air collision with a P-40 on this day. The identity of the P-40 is not confirmed but could have been that of F/O J O McFarlane, flying NZ3175, coded 65.
